In many rural areas, development comes in short bursts: a project here, a water point there – and a few years later, they are broken or abandoned.

Meanwhile, public money intended for basic services disappears into weak systems and poor accountability.

African Development Choices (ADC) focuses on the root of the problem: how decisions about public money are made. Through our Wajibika (“take responsibility”) pilot in Nyansakia village, Western Kenya, we are working with local residents and county government to unlock and redirect existing public funds into well-built, well-maintained WASH facilities – toilets, handwashing and water – that actually last.

Instead of building one more short-lived project, your donation helps establish a precedent: a real-world example of higher-quality services delivered at lower cost, with communities meaningfully involved in decisions about public money. This precedent becomes proof that better is possible – and a template others can follow.
